Summer Layers

If I have learned one thing from a summer in California, it's dress in layers. The Bay Area consists of many microclimates with drastically varying temperatures. One minute it's sunny and 70 degrees, the next it's windy and 55 degrees. It's sounds dreamy, but it definitely makes for a challenge in my daily style. One I'm happily willing to tackle.

Oakland (where I'm living) is referred to as the sunny side of the bay, because it's usually warmer than San Francisco. Every time I go into the city I always bring a jacket because I'm bound to get cold (and I learned my lesson the hard way to always have an extra layer). Then there are the piping hot temps you usually think of when you picture California. The further inland you go, the warmer the weather. Temperatures can easily reach the 90's, all within a 30 mile radius of Oakland.

It's quite nice actually, the varying temperatures. Friday we spent the day in the city walking along the water. The houses are just amazing; ocean views, rooftop decks, the whole works. There the weather was cold and windy. It's so different experiencing the fourth of July without the sweltering summer in Iowa. We grabbed dinner at Off the Grid, which is a giant roaming food truck extravaganza. They have some seriously good food and drinks, and a fun atmosphere with music. Saturday we traveled inland and visited the Alameda County Fair. I was happy to finally experience some real summer heat! The car thermometer read 96 degrees, which really isn't as bad as it sounds since there is absolutely no humidity. I couldn't be happier. My favorite part of the fair was the petting zoo. Totally a kid thing, but too cute to resist! Little piglets, deer, llamas, goats and even kangaroos were all roaming around waiting to be fed. The baby goats were seriously the sweetest! I couldn't believe how tame and calm they were around so many people.

I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! I'm wishing I had just one more day to recover and relax before jumping into a busy month. It's hard to believe I'm already half way through my stay in Cali!

Remember that time I went to eat oysters for a photo shoot with Apartment 34? The article is live on Rue Daily! Can you spot me?

  1. I wish we didn't have the humidity to deal with here in Missouri...I could cut the air with a butter knife right now! I spot ya! Great feature :)

    1. I'm not complaining about missing out on the humidity, that's for sure!
