Over the past several months I was working day and night on a complete site redesign and migration to Wordpress. I really wanted to customize my design and have more flexibility in my plugin options, so I thought it was time to make the switch. I quickly found out that a complete overhaul of my blog was going to take WAY longer and include MUCH more work than I anticipated. I'm thankful for my brother in law who was able to help with coding my website and make design decisions (color, font, layout), and for Food Blogger Pro who has over 100 hundred videos that walk you through the migration process from Blogger to Wordpress as well as other key tricks to making your blog look good. I highly suggest FBP (It's not just for food bloggers! It covers all the basics any blogger should know.) to anyone who is looking to improve their blog, whether it's photography or a redesign.

After many months of long hours and hard work, I'm so proud of how my new blog turned out! It's still the same content, just prettier and in a new location :) I hope you will head on over to Hammer and Heels and check out the new blog! Please leave me a comment and let me know how I did.

I'm a summer girl. My birthday is in August (next week!!), the days are long, temperatures are hot, and the grass is green. So many good memories come from summertime. Growing up my friends and I loved boating and I still go any chance I get. There's something to be said about basking in the sun and the wind in your hair. With boating outings happening less and less these days, I like to bring the beach to my home. OK, not literally. But summer is on its way out (how is that even possible??) so I like to cherish the days and make my home feel like a summer retreat, beach or not.

With just a few key elements, your home will feel like a relaxing getaway!

Bright White
White walls, bedding, and furniture create the perfect foundation for cool blues and warm wood finishes for a cohesive look.

Raw Wood Elements
The casual and rustic elements of raw wood chairs, tables, and floors add the organic, weathered feel you'd find outdoors.

Shades of Blue
Incorporate a range of blues in your textiles, decor, and furniture, but balance out the cool colors with warm wood accents.

Woven Designs
Rattan, seagrass rugs, woven blinds and furniture add a casual beach chic aesthetic.

Stripes
The versatile stripe is effortlessly beachy and preppy in everything from rugs to pillows and wallpaper to window treatments.
I've been tediously working on my blog redesign for about three months perfecting a new logo, colors, layout, and more so you have the best experience here at H&H. I'm happy to (finally) announce the full blog reveal will be August 1st at a whole new website, so come back here Friday to check out the new bells and whistles.

My inbox is flooded with e-mail subscriptions. I love getting mail, and with so many talented business women/entrepreneurs/creatives out there with newsletters, I always subscribe so I don't miss a thing. I get everything from marketing tips to networking advice to how to manage finances. While emails do take time to filter through (right now I have about 40 unread!), I always come away with a little nugget of new information. The other day I was reading Kate Northrup's e-mail where she shared a story about her and a friend at a launch party. Kate's friend came up to her with the best conversation starter I've heard yet, "What are you most excited about right now?" We've all been to events where the very first question out of everyone's mouth is, "What do you do?" Though an important networking question (let's be honest), I love the idea of starting a conversation with something a little more personal, less business. You know, so you can actually get to know the person. You might even catch the person off guard (in a good way)!

As I was reading Kate's e-mail, I started thinking about what's going on in my life that I'm most excited about. This summer has been such an experience. I'm glad I had the chance to live in California and experience a fast-paced big city. Visiting is fun, but you never get the chance to fully immerse yourself in a city until you've stayed for a couple months. While I've adjusted quite easily, I do miss a few things about home. Ample parking being one of them. In August my boyfriend is finally making his way out West and visiting for the first time. I'm excited for a fun trip to Lake Tahoe and hanging out like we're used to. What are you most excited about right now?

Try asking someone next time you strike up a conversation!

I promised a tour of my home here in California, so here it is! I played around with YouTube and thought I could pull off a really cool video of the space without ever working with video before. I failed. Miserably. Those YouTube beauty gurus sure know what they're doing! You guys, it's hard stuff to make a video that isn't blurry and horribly edited and I admire anyone that can do it (tell me your secrets!) I'm so impressed with 14 year olds that have it figured out. So, I saved you from a blurry video and I'm sharing bright, pretty photos instead.

I'm staying with my older sister and her husband here in Oakland for the summer. They're renting an old home with lots of charm and they have the freedom to paint, hang things, and decorate which is a major blessing in the rental world. My sister actually has a degree in interior design and I just love what she's done with the place. The whole house is spacious and the natural light is insane, which is a must in my own home.

Style wise, my sister and I have very similar tastes. We both like white, textures, modern designs with touches of rustic elements. However, I tend to fall heavier on the mid-century modern side than my sister. While I didn't help with any of the decor throughout the house, I thought it was too pretty of a space not to share! Don't you just love it? I'm sleeping in the guest/storage room which is small, but we managed to fit a nice futon and some shelving for my things. I'm still sprucing up the room a bit so I didn't photograph it yet.

If I have learned one thing from a summer in California, it's dress in layers. The Bay Area consists of many microclimates with drastically varying temperatures. One minute it's sunny and 70 degrees, the next it's windy and 55 degrees. It's sounds dreamy, but it definitely makes for a challenge in my daily style. One I'm happily willing to tackle.

Oakland (where I'm living) is referred to as the sunny side of the bay, because it's usually warmer than San Francisco. Every time I go into the city I always bring a jacket because I'm bound to get cold (and I learned my lesson the hard way to always have an extra layer). Then there are the piping hot temps you usually think of when you picture California. The further inland you go, the warmer the weather. Temperatures can easily reach the 90's, all within a 30 mile radius of Oakland.

It's quite nice actually, the varying temperatures. Friday we spent the day in the city walking along the water. The houses are just amazing; ocean views, rooftop decks, the whole works. There the weather was cold and windy. It's so different experiencing the fourth of July without the sweltering summer in Iowa. We grabbed dinner at Off the Grid, which is a giant roaming food truck extravaganza. They have some seriously good food and drinks, and a fun atmosphere with music. Saturday we traveled inland and visited the Alameda County Fair. I was happy to finally experience some real summer heat! The car thermometer read 96 degrees, which really isn't as bad as it sounds since there is absolutely no humidity. I couldn't be happier. My favorite part of the fair was the petting zoo. Totally a kid thing, but too cute to resist! Little piglets, deer, llamas, goats and even kangaroos were all roaming around waiting to be fed. The baby goats were seriously the sweetest! I couldn't believe how tame and calm they were around so many people.

I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! I'm wishing I had just one more day to recover and relax before jumping into a busy month. It's hard to believe I'm already half way through my stay in Cali!

Remember that time I went to eat oysters for a photo shoot with Apartment 34? The article is live on Rue Daily! Can you spot me?
One of my favorite things about Instagram is the ability to discover unique and beautiful shops. I'm constantly stumbling over new shops and pretty Instagram accounts I hadn't known before. Ah, the power of social media. Recently I came across Parc Boutique. Based in Minneapolis, they are a shop for the modern and minimalist. Located only a couple hours from my hometown, I definitely need to make a trip back to the city just to check them out in person.

I mentioned earlier that I'm drawn to modern, neutral styles lately. I'm in a bit of a transition and shying away from my usual brights to more muted and chic designs. Parc Boutique has modern and clean written all over it and I am OBSESSED. They nailed it on the head with a perfectly curated boutique of beautiful jewelry, clothing, and pretty packaged products. And if you are looking for some inspiration (who isn't?) then you should check out their Instagram, like now. Thao is a creative genius and I'm totally stalking their account for styling tips.

The Chock Block Copper Necklace, Leather Bracelets, Horse Watch, Linear Earrings, Soy Candle, and White Vest are a few of my favorites from the shop, though honestly I wanting everything.

Do you have a favorite shop you think I would love? I want to hear about it!

One of my jobs as a kid was picking up branches. We lived on a farm with a grove of trees, so every spring we had to pick up branches off the ground so we could mow the lawn. Though the job was tedious and I always dreaded it, my dad offered us one cent for each branch we picked up as an incentive. It sounded like a great deal at the time, considering how many branches were strew around.

I love the feeling of natural elements inside a home.
Things like fur, wood, and stone create texture and warm up a place making it feel more cozy. Especially in modern, neutral spaces which can often feel sterile and cold. I love the simplicity and pure genius of using branches as decor. They are essentially free and look incredibly effortless. I see a future DIY coming your way!

It was Saturday morning in Oakland. A number of creators and makers set up stands displaying their proudest collections of things for sale. Pretty stone rings, woven blankets, and vintage purses were waiting for someone to snatch them up. After briefly meeting one of the shop owners and exchanging business cards, I was complimented on my necklace. I thanked her and she followed with the usual question, "who makes it?" I was attending an event that celebrates small businesses and the handmade. So I proceeded to answer her question with my honest answer, American Eagle. The raised eyebrow staring back at me was a bit surprising. Should I not have told the truth?

There I was at a small business party, amazed that the woman was so disgusted that I even dare walk into American Eagle, let alone purchase something. I laughed it off and walked away. I'm a huge fan of handmade goods and supporting small businesses. After all, I am a DIYer and run my own blog. My feelings aren't hurt and I certainly don't mind if she has something against American Eagle. But it made me think about design and the perception of "good design." The woman liked my necklace (so it clearly was "stylish" enough to pass as hand-crafted), but once she knew it was from a chain store, she was uninterested. I'm a firm believer in attainable design, no matter the budget or brand and that's the whole essence of this blog.

On another note, I watched my first soccer game yesterday! I'm from a tiny town where soccer wasn't even an option to play as a sport in high school (crazy huh, considering it's one of the biggest global sports), so I never understood the game or even watched one before. All my thoughts that soccer is "boring" are out the window after watching USA and Portugal.
On Saturday we're going to the launch party of the new book, This Is Oakland. It's a book that explores the best boutiques, shops, restaurants, and bars that make Oakland the fun and culturally diverse city that it is. I've had the chance to visit a few shops here and there, but I can't wait to wander around the beautiful stores this weekend. The photos in the book are amazing and I'm itching all week to check them out in person.
Have a great weekend! Stay tuned next week for a new video (If I can figure out how to make it not so blurry after I upload it. Any ideas?) I'm really trying to get back on schedule and post every Monday, Wednesday, Friday like I used to. Life is busy but I miss posting more frequently. I'm also finishing up the final touches to the new website so I can finally share it with you guys!

I have always loved magazines. When I was in 7th grade I subscribed to Lucky magazine when it first came out. Mostly because my older sister read it, so naturally that meant I should to. Turned out I loved the magazine and currently am a happy subscriber. These days I have less free time to sit down and read my favorites, but this past weekend I picked up the summer Domino issue. You must g`o get your pretty little hands on an issue NOW. A home decor magazine is right up my alley anyway, but the whole magazine is choke full of beautiful homes and inspiring content. You know how sometimes a magazine looks great from the cover, and but the inside ends up stale and less interesting? Well, domino will not disappoint. I was ooing and awing as I flipped page after page, not in public might I add. The issue is the epitome of summer: easy breezy style and cool spaces. Plus, if you are looking for cheery abstract art check out Sally King Benedict. She's completely adorable and I'm totally wearing her cover outfit to an upcoming wedding in August. Let's just say she made me change my option on crop tops.

On Monday I was on location for a shoot with Apartment 34 and Rue! We left the city for the afternoon, ate oysters, and drank wine. It was so much fun working with other people in the industry, and getting a behind-the-scenes experience on a photo shoot. You might even spot me in the upcoming feature, so stay tuned!

It was a great work week with fun people and I'm so excited for upcoming projects and just learning the ropes. Refinery29 showed a sneak peek of Apartment 34's office this week, so if you haven't already you can check out where I'm spending time this summer :) And yes, it is just as gorgeous in person as it is in photos. Erin, the founder of Apartment 34, has mastered the modern design and I'm so obsessed with her clean and airy aesthetic.

So much in fact, that I'm finding myself in a bit of a transition. I'd like to think I'm growing and evolving now that I'm graduated and working. I'm in California experiencing new and different things and I'm just taking it all in. One thing I particularly love here is the amount of good design. Every shop, restaurant, and home is full of gorgeous pieces and it's so well-styled. It's inspiring to be surrounded by design constantly. Not that the Midwest doesn't have beautiful coffee shops and boutiques -- because they do -- but it's more frequent here in the Bay Area. I love learning new ways to style a shelf, incorporate a unique piece of art, and think about design differently just by paying attention to my surroundings.

My love for pink and girly elements is evolving and I have a greater appreciation for more sophisticated design with a neutral color palette in fashion and decor. That's the great thing about design. You never have to settle on just one aesthetic, it evolves with you.

Let's take a look at some inspiration photos shall we...
As you know I have been working on a blog design for the past month now. It's time to step up my design game and have a professional website with my own domain. The plan is to finish it in the next few weeks! It's been fun working on the project, but I'm getting anxious to show it to you all! While I redesign my site, I'm also thinking about new ways to approach blogging and bring new, exciting content every week. Part of my reason for posting less on here lately is not only because of my busy schedule and moving headache, but also because I want to be more conscious about what I'm posting. I want you all to the love the content, and I want as much of it as possible to be original. Which of course is also the most time-consuming to create.

Working for Powder Room this summer means I'm watching tons of makeup tutorials on YouTube so I know the top beauty bloggers and am up to date with the latest industry news. I'm amazed at how well-edited each video is, and how comfortable beauty bloggers are in front of the camera. I know I enjoy watching videos (compared to reading), so I have to wonder what video would do for H&H and you lovely audience! I have NO idea how to go about recording a video or uploading it to YouTube, but just like blogging or anything else, it takes time and practice to get good. I may experiment with video for a bit and see what I come up. If you have any tips (editing software, lighting, etc) I want to hear from you!

I'd love your thoughts on video and if you think it'd be worth incorporating, so let me know in the comments!

In other exciting news, I was just offered a marketing internship position at one of my favorite blogs, Apartment 34!!! I met them for an interview last week and they were incredibly sweet and offered me a position for the summer. This is seriously a dream come true to work for such an amazingly successful lifestyle site! I'm so excited to soak it all in and learn as much as I can about the digital media world. As always, I will give you updates and photos of everything so you can follow along with me :)

Thanks you for reading and have a wonderful weekend!
Hello again! It's officially been one week since moving out West to California for the summer. Honestly, it seems like I have been here longer than a week. I'm coming off a great weekend and apparently I got a little excited when writing the recap and got a little carried away...so I will forewarn you this post is quite long. Those strictly interested in the swag bag haul might want to jump to the bottom. For those of you interested in my life story...read on :)
My sister and brother-in-law's home is spacious and comfortable (and well-decorated might I add. I'll give you a tour soon!) so I'm fitting right in. They have a small spare room where I keep my stuff, but it was used as a storage room before so it needs a little reorganizing. My decorating instincts are coming out so I'm already brainstorming organization ideas to save on space in the small room.
During the day I'm found working on the Powder Room app from home and running errands with my brother-in-law, Chris. I've already been to a few delicious restaurants and eat out more than I did in a whole month in Iowa. There are just so many good options and it's part of experiencing the city, right? Last Friday I had a job interview in San Francisco, but got lost for about an hour and walked up and down the same street looking for a nonexistent address. Turns out I was given the wrong address for the interview, but on the plus side I was able to see more of the city and came across some beautiful homes.
Friday night my sister and I flew to LA for the Generation Beauty event to promote Powder Room and meet bloggers. My sister, Ida, is the co-founder of Powder Room, and despite being ten years apart, we have similar tastes and interests so it's fun getting to work with her. The Powder Room website launched this weekend so be sure to check it out and sign up for updates so you can participate in beta testing when we are ready to launch!

I wasn't sure exactly what to expect at Generation Beauty. I had never attended a beauty conference before, nor had I traveled to LA. When we arrived at the event that morning the whole place was buzzing with excitement. Music was blaring and hundreds of girls were beaming and dolled up, ready to chat about all things beauty. I'm aware of the YouTube phenomenon and have my favorite vloggers I turn to for beauty advice, but you can't fully understand the capacity of YouTubers until you experience it first hand. These are young women, some top vloggers as young as 14, that love makeup and managed to build a huge following by being honest, fun, and genuine in their videos. The event attendants in general skewed below the age of 21, and it's incredible to see how many impressionable teenagers are flocking to beauty. They certainly know way more about makeup than I did at that age. It's truly inspiring knowing the whole Generation Beauty event was created because of YouTube bloggers. In today's society more and more are turning to bloggers for advice on makeup and beauty, and turning less to brands and traditional marketing.

Throughout the two-day event we stood in lines, chatted with brands, got our hair braided, and tested some amazing, new products. We also had the chance to meet Josie Maran, the founder of Josie Maran Cosmetics. She had fantastic advice for budding entrepreneurs. She invited us to sit on the ground in a circle as she opened the floor to questions. You can't get any cooler than that, and now I'm coming away with more respect and maybe even a little biased towards her natural products. What can I say, her down-to-earth boho personality is contagious. We also met Michelle Phan (who we embarrassingly towered over), the most poised and respectful woman despite being hugely successful. Even after the line kept growing and growing, she never turned down fans during the meet and greet.

The event was inspiring to say the least after witnessing the power of video and how it's given people amazing opportunities to share their opinions with millions of viewers. Of course, I can't talk about Generation Beauty and not mention the swag bags. All of the brands at the event provided products for swag bags that were given at the end of both days. I've never seen so many girls make a mad dash like that before.
While I'm not a beauty blogger, I did want to share with you some of my favorite products from the swag bag. We received about 40 products and based on my first impressions, these are my favorites.
The EM Cosmetics lipsticks by Michelle Phan are super creamy and moisturizing. The Dirty Girl mask by Pur Minerals instantly made my skin clear and really soft the next morning. Cream blushes are huge lately, and while I'm still mastering the application, they have serious payout in color. So I don't make this post any longer than it already is, let me know if you have specific questions about products and I'll cover them in more detail.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8963809898167322370.post-37720183240923314722014-05-28T04:00:00.000-07:002014-05-28T11:36:49.228-07:00Living Room Progress

Today is the day! I'm flying to San Francisco today and starting my summer adventure there working on an exiting beauty app. Stay tuned for app updates in the coming months. I can't wait to share it with you all and get your feedback! We already have a jam-packed schedule starting the moment I get to SF which is exciting jumping right in! This weekend I'll be in LA for the Generation Beauty Event by Ipsy meeting tons of beauty bloggers (hello Michelle Phan!) and networking. Follow along on Instagram and Twitter for tons of photos. But before I fly out, I want to give you a look at the living room progress in my house in Iowa. I won't get to decorate the house for a few months while I'm gone, so I was running around like crazy trying to finish the main projects.
Hanging the floating shelves turned out to be a huge project that I didn't anticipate taking four hours. We got the wood cut at Home Depot and my boyfriend stained the boards. It was going so smoothly until we started drilling holes in the wall and hanging the shelves. We were drilling into sheet rock and the boards were literally ripping out of the wall the moment we put any pressure on it. So after a run to the hardware store, a desperate call to my dad, and three gaping (they are still visible) holes later, we finally securely hung the shelves. I knew it was important to hang heavy pieces in studs (the boards behind the sheet rock holding it up), but I never expected the shelves to cause a problem! Luckily, we were able to find the studs and shift the brackets securing the shelves accordingly. It's not a DIY project without a little madness.

We picked out the sectional and hairpin leg side table at Nebraska Furniture Mart. You probably recognize a lot of the decor from my previous studio apartment. Most of it transitioned perfectly into the new house without being too girly. The theme for the house overall is blue coastal. You can find my inspiration photos here. Painting the walls white was a given because I'm obsessed with light and bright spaces, and in order to incorporate my boyfriend's style I wanted to bring in some rustic elements. Nautical decor is popping up everywhere lately and I'm totally diggin it. Even though the house isn't a beach house, minor nautical elements like the striped baskets and wicker add a subtle touch. Since taking the photos we have hung white sheer curtains. I just need to add a little wall art, some final styling details, and the living room is complete!

I'll share the floating shelves and blue credenza tutorials later. I hope you all are having a wonderful week!

I'm not sure how to start today's blog post. I could start by apologizing for my sudden absence on the blog the past couple weeks due to my busy schedule, but who isn't? Or I could talk about graduation and how much I'm enjoying the "real world", but in reality, I'm still looking for a full-time job. Or the fact that I didn't have Internet for a week kind of put a damper on the whole blogging and working thing. And to top it all off, I got my wisdom teeth pulled. To be honest, these last few weeks have been anything but extraordinary. Nobody likes a Debbie downer so I won't bore you with all the details, but a string of unfortunate events has taken its toll.

The more I thought about blogging and what I should write about, the more stressed I got because I didn't have anything new to say. Blogging is a funny thing. We see all of these bloggers living extravagant lives with designer clothing and gorgeous skin and assume everything must be perfect. I'm sure things are going well, but they have bad days too just like the rest of us. I was so hung up on everything else that has been going on that I lost inspiration and had nothing left to say.

A few days ago I came across a quote that really resonated with me. I didn't save it and now I can't find it back, but it went something like this: inspiration doesn't come to those wait, but to those who look. I didn't say it nearly as nicely as the original source, but basically you have search for inspiration, you can't expect it to come to you. All along I was tangled up in my own problems and found myself out of my element and the inspiration stopped flowing. I wasn't browsing Instagram, chatting on Twitter, or even attempting to blog. I completely shut off. How can I expect an awesome blog post idea to pop in my head without even trying to blog? Just as you can't expect to perfect your free throw shot just by thinking about it, you have to practice.

I'm happy to say I am out of my funk and ready to tackle my giant to-do list. No Internet for a week set back my blog redesign, but I am excited for the reveal coming soon!

I'm officially moved out of my studio apartment and into my new home with my boyfriend. He bought a house (which explains why I didn't have Internet) and now I have the joys of decorating a new place! Here you will find the living room, kitchen, and bedroom inspiration I blogged about earlier. Every room is painted except the bathroom, so now it's time to tackle the fun part.

My sister offered me a position to help with an app she and her husband are working on called Powder Room. It's an app that keeps beauty products simple and fun. You can easily search or scan products, organize them into lists or looks, and share them with your friends and followers. Since I didn't have a full-time offer I decided to take the opportunity to move to San Francisco for a few months and work on an exciting app! The Bay Area is my favorite place to visit so I am excited to explore the city for a few months. I fly out on Wednesday so I'm running around trying to select furniture for my boyfriend's house so it feels somewhat like a home before I leave. The blog will cover my new adventures in California along with regular DIY and home posts. I will share my house updates and decor selection when I come back to Iowa in a few months. I'm so excited for this opportunity and can't wait to spend the summer in my favorite state!

Have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend!

Hello! It's been quite the last couple weeks, you guys. I've graduated college, had a wonderful weekend full of good food, drinks, and family, coordinated a move, continue to work on a blog redesign, and now I'm knee deep in boxes as I pack up my apartment. Where did the weekend go? I need to be out of my apartment by 11am tomorrow! Fingers crossed I make it happen. I'll take any moving tips/advice you've got. I've moved six times in the last four years and it's still a nightmare every time. So as all of this last minute craziness was happening, naturally, I decided to tackle a DIY instead of packing. Luckily, the lipstick holder DIY was a breeze and turned out better than expected! Read on for the full tutorial.

During Christmas time I saw this lipstick holder at Anthropologie and loved it, but it was backordered so I never ended up purchasing it. Then last week as I was brainstorming DIY project ideas and I remembered the lipstick holder and wanted to find a way to make my own. I took a trip to Lowe's and started wandering around the store looking for materials for a lipstick holder and here's what I came up with.

Supplies:
Plexiglass sheet, $5 Lowe's.
Copper tubes, $1 each at Lowe's in the plumbing section
Wood plugs, $2 Lowe's
Gorilla Glue
Total: $12

Step 1
Remove the price stickers on the copper tubes. I used a sharp knife to scrape off the sticker which worked really well.

Step 2
Arrange your copper tubes on your plexiglass square. Since I don't have an electric saw, I had Lowe's cut my sheet to the desire size. I decided to use 7 copper tubes, but you can use as many as you'd like!

Step 3
Glue your copper tubes to the plexiglass sheet. Dab a small amount of glue along the bottom of the copper tube and press on the plexiglass.

Step 4
After you glued all of the tubes, now it's time to glue the flat head plugs to the bottom of the plexiglass sheet. You don't have to add these if you don't want to, but I think it's nice to raise the plexiglass off the surface. I used four plugs and hid them on the underside of the copper tubes.

Another easy and beautiful DIY! This lipstick holder will be so cute sitting on my vanity. I store my lipsticks and glosses out of sight, but then I forget to use them so I love the idea of having my favorites in sight.

Today's the day! I'm walking at the Business College graduation ceremony and celebrating with family and friends at a local brewery afterwards. I cannot wait! Did you walk at your graduation ceremony? I attended my siblings a few years back and remembered the ceremony dragged on forever, but I couldn't NOT walk! This is a memory I want to cherish forever.

My older sister flew in from San Francisco yesterday and we spent the day getting manicures, drinking coffee and had dinner at the cutest restaurant with the best food. Fellow Iowans, you must try Eatery A in Des Moines and get the potato egg pizza. I'm aware it's not exactly a typical pizza, but the waitress recommended it and it was amazing. I didn't miss red sauce and pepperoni one bit. I have a jam packed weekend with our celebration tonight, a full day of dress shopping on Saturday for my sister's wedding, and a photo shoot and lunch with family on Mother's Day, and hopefully champagne is involved too. I'm stoked! I'll be documenting the weekend so follow along on Instagram for graduation pics and if you want to see my new shorter, blonder hairdo :)

Have a great weekend, my friends!
As a kid, I made most of my gifts for holidays. You could say I was born with the DIY gene. I remember one year I made a little "coaster" for Mother's Day out of beads that you make a pretty design and iron them so they melt and stick together. Remember those?

For you last minute gifters that have yet to get a gift for the special woman in your life, you are in luck! I came across this DIY vase post and I instantly fell in love with the pretty, watercolor-esque vase and knew I had to make one. Luckily this project is easy enough it only has 2 steps!! Yep. You can make this in a half hour!

Alcohol ink

Glass vase

Modge Podge

Paint brush

Step 1

Apply drops of ink on the outside of the glass vase while it's standing upside down. I didn't have a pattern in mind I wanted to create, so I just started placing drops and letting the ink do its thing. It's okay if the ink doesn't run all the way down. You can always add more, but the point is for it to look organic and unintentional. When I applied the drops of ink I never actually squeezed the bottle, I just let a drop fall out. I decided to hang on to the vase myself so I could place drops and turn the vase to make the ink run in different directions. Play around with the arrangement and color until you have something you like. I applied the different colored inks before each one had completely dried (but it does dry quickly), so that may have been the reason the ink got a little dark in some areas.

If you get too much color in one area, you can remove the ink easily with some rubbing alcohol and q-tips. I actually used nail polish remover because that's what I had on hand and it worked great.

Step 2

Once you are happy with your ink design, it's time to seal it so the ink stays put. I used Modge Podge, but a clear polyurethane works as well. Make sure to cover every inch that has ink or the ink might come off as it gets wet. The Modge Podge makes the glass a little cloudy, but I actually like how it muted the overall look a bit.

There you have it! The simplest no-fail DIY known to man. Maybe that's a little dramatic, but you seriously cannot mess this one up. I love how bright and fun it looks! I have an obsession with marble and anything remotely close to it (watercolors, swirls, this) so I'm dreaming up all kinds of fun projects using alcohol ink so I can get my marble fix. Alcohol ink has so much potential! I think it would be really pretty on a white vase, or even one of those stained vases from Hobby Lobby that already has a tint of color.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Do/did you have any fun plans for the celebration? Friday night I got drinks with my boyfriend and some friends, but Saturday and Sunday I spent my time working on the new blog design and preparing for finals. Tonight I won't be going out, but I do plan on making a Tex-Mex dish for supper. That counts, right?
It's kind of surreal to think this is my final week as a student at Iowa State. I hate to keep bringing it up, but I'm in shock so I just want to keep talking about it as if that will make it slow down! The last four years have literally flown by. I still remember moving into the dorms the very first dayand thinking that I had all the time in the world to figure out what I wanted to do. Graduation sounded so far away. There were days it felt like it would never end and graduation couldn't come soon enough, but overall I can't believe that four years have passed so quickly! I know everyone always talks about that, but I can't say it enough. So many of my days were wasted wishing for the summer or spring break, or whatever it was, and I really want to live in the moment and be happy with what I'm doing so I'm not wishing away time. I keep thinking about the next four years, and how they will probably fly by just as fast (if not faster) and where I'll be at that point in my life. With my career, blogging, relationships, location…so many goals and changes ahead with no idea where life is about to lead me. I'm excited to see what lies ahead. One of my personal goals is to embark on more adventures. Blogging is nothing without experiences and stories to share, so I'm on a quest to try new things -- beginning with a trip to LA! My older sister is attending the Generation Beauty by Ipsy for work and asked if I wanted to come. I couldn't pass up on a chance to see LA and talk about all things beauty with the top beauty bloggers!

I'm sharing a few snapshots of my life at this moment. Since I have to be out of my apartment by the end of the month, my place is a bit of a mess right now as I get organized and start to pack things up and get rid of things. Over the past month or two I was consciously trying not to acquire new decor or things that take up lots of space (besides clothing), while going through my closet and selling the items that I no longer wear. I can't wait to move and get settled into a new home and start up on lots of decorating posts again!

About a month ago I read a blog post on To Vogue or Bust about natural skincare, specifically natural clay. I was intrigued by her incredible results that claimed to banish breakouts after a few days. Alexandra went in great detail about the clay and different ways and benefits of using it. If you haven't read her post, I suggest you do if you are interested in natural skincare. It was incredibly interesting and she has some great tips and other product suggestions.

After hearing about all the benefits of clay bentonite and its claim to clear up and even out skin tone, I was sold. I ordered myself some clay bentonite that night and couldn't wait to give it a try. I have been using it for just under a month now for about 3-4 times a week and I love it! I have oily acne-prone skin and it's helped dry up my skin a lot and even out my skin tone as well. My skill feels softer and more healthy and I'm overall impressed. This stuff really works. The best part is that it's only $10 for a full jar!

I mix about a teaspoon of clay powder with a tablespoon of water. Stir with a plastic utensil (metal deactivates the clay's electric properties) until it forms a thick paste. I like to apply the mask all over my face and leave it on for about 15-20 minutes or until it dries.

Do you follow a natural skincare routine? What are your favorite skincare products?

Have a great weekend! I finished up dead week this past week which means finals starts on Monday. I fortunately only have two finals this year and then consider me an Iowa State alum :) I'm working on an amazing blog redesign which is super exciting, new post ideas, and I'm also taking a deep dive course on Wordpress (I'm switching over. If anyone has advice on how to handle the migration it's greatly appreciated :)) to learn all the ins and outs so the blog is a place that's organized and makes reading and following along easier for you! I hope to roll out the changes by June first, which sounds far away but is going to sneak up on us in no time! Which is a scary thought in itself.

As I'm making changes at H&H, keep pinning, liking, sharing, and commenting on your favorite blog posts so I know which ones you're loving and I'll be sure to plan more of them for the future!
Did you have a good weekend? Friday was such a hectic day with four flights and a day at the Kohl's headquarters. Our presentation went well and we had the chance to tour the corporate office and meet with some marketing professionals. It was so cool to learn about all of the things that goes on behind the scenes of a major retailer. On Saturday I had so much fun helping my sister pick out wedding dresses. I've never been dress shopping before but I have heard that the bride always goes into it having an idea what she wants, and ends up leaving with something completely different!

What I hoped was a restful weekend, ended up being the opposite and I'm already playing catch up on sleep and work. Aren't we all? It's dead week at school which means it's the week before finals so teachers are supposed to be light on assignments so we can focus on studying. I only have two finals this semester so I'm finishing up final papers. Wahoo!

I came across this styling a bed article on Rue a few weeks back and I kept thinking about it and wanted to share it with you all. I've mentioned many times on here before I'm a sucker for bedding and if I could get new bedding every week, I would. So when it comes to styling a bed, I'm always up for new tips and tricks. Something as simple as your pillow arrangement can make all the difference! Which look is your favorite? I love the stacked pillow look because it's a bit more unique.

Style your bed and send pictures on social media so we can all see each other's favorite style using the hashtag #hhstylechallenge!
Hello from Milwaukee! I'm on a super quick school trip to Milwaukee today visiting the Kohl's headquarters. I was up at 4am to catch our 6am flight and heading back home later this evening. My marketing class had a competition with Kohl's and my group was selected as the winner, so we are presenting to Kohl's executives and touring the place. Wish us luck!

Remember that failed DIY that went horribly wrong no matter how I tried to fix it? Well, you're looking at it! I had a brilliant idea of recreating the Jonathan Adler Zebra dish I love for a cheaper DIY version. Last week when working on this project, everything that could go wrong, did. I set the dumb thing aside and whipped up the flower necklace DIY so I had something to post last week. The rest of the week I was thinking about how I could salvage the zebra dish because I had already spent so much time on it and I was too stubborn to throw the whole thing out. I stopped obsessing over it and analyzing my every last mistake, and a few days later when I came back to it, it didn't actually look half bad!

While it took me way to many hours than I want to admit to complete this zebra dish, I learned my lesson so I can prevent you from making the same ones. Keep reading for the full tutorial.

Step 1

I followed the instructions on the package of clay which said to moisten the clay with water and knead until it was easy to work with. My clay was already pretty workable, so I just dampened my fingers with water and kneaded the clay for a few minutes.

Step 2

Roll out the clay on your cutting board into an even sheet, about a half inch thick. I would use a rolling pin for this step if you have one so you can get an even layer. My kitchen is far from well-stocked (I only have one pan!) so I used the palms of my hands to flatten out the clay into an even sheet.

Step 3

Next, cut out your desired shape! I used a knife while looking at a picture of the Jonathan Adler zebra dish shape online. If you mess up it's not a big deal because you can always add or take away clay.

Step 4

Once you cut out your shape, you want to smooth any edges and even out the layer as much as possible, but be careful to not make it too thin. Now it's time to start giving your zebra a little shape. I just worked with my hands to create "edges" along the side so the zebra isn't completely flat. I continually dipped my fingers in water when working with the clay because it made the clay more pliable and also helped smooth out finger prints and other indentations.

Step 5

After you have smoothed out the zebra and are happy with your shape, it's time to let it dry! I let mine dry for a good 24 hours before touching it. When my zebra dried it also "raised" so only the feet touch the surface. Weird, but ended up working out nicely!

Step 6

If there is any unevenness or edges you'd like to file down, do that after your zebra is completely dry. I used a glass nail file and it worked well. This step is totally optional! My zebra had some areas I wanted to file down and it worked pretty well, but didn't make it perfect.

Step 7

Spray paint the zebra gold. I just painted the top side, but that's up to you if you want to do the bottom as well. Once that dries, paint the outside edges of your zebra with acrylic paint to clean up the look. Now it's time to paint the stripes! I just looked at a picture and free-hand painted the stripes with a brush. I'm sure a paint pen would work great as well. I did about three coats of white paint in the stripes to make sure it was well-covered.

*Editor's note: I thought I was saving time by cutting out a stripe template in paper to then lay on top of the zebra while I spray painted it gold, creating stripes. The template took FOREVER to cut out and it ended up not working at all, so I just spray painted the whole zebra gold.

This DIY takes a little bit of patience, but if you don't make my mistakes you should have it finished in a couple hours. Overall I'm happy with the result! $32 is not a lot of money for the real thing, but DIYs are all about customizing it to your own liking, right? You can paint it how ever your heart desires! Plus there is leftover clay to make at least 3 more.

Do you have any fun plans this weekend? My sister who got engaged recently is trying on a few dresses this Saturday and I'm so excited!! One of the dresses I actually spotted online :)

A couple weeks ago I asked on Instagram if you are interested in seeing some shelf styling tips on the blog. I got great feedback and you all couldn't have been more excited about the idea, so I'm sharing my tips and tricks that I use when arranging my shelves and bookcases. Thank you for your input and enthusiasm! It's so exciting knowing how eager y'all are to learn.

When I moved into my apartment in August, I kind of just threw everything on my bookcase without much thought. It was the last of my worries at that point, so I figured I would come back to it and do some actual styling. While I did go back and arrange my shelves a little, I wasn't completely happy with the result, but I had other things to worry about so I just left it as is. Well, over the last several months I managed to accumulate more things, and while I'm happy to have some new jewelry, cute bowls, and clutches, my tiny apartment just doesn't have room to store everything. My bookcase became the catchall for a lot of trinkets and things and it started to get a little crowded.

Here is the before picture. There is clearly too much stuff and a lot of color going on, without any real organization or thought behind it.

Here's the after! While it might not look that different, in person it looks way more thought out and organized, so I'm happy. I kept most of the items I had before, but removed some extras and exchanged a few for items I had laying around my apartment. One thing to remember when styling is that it takes time! I did not whip this up in ten minutes. Honestly it probably took me over an hour. You have to be patient and play with it for a while before finding the "right" design you like. I arranged and rearranged many times before deciding on this.

The two bins are full of DIY craft supplies, so I placed them on top so you can't see the messy stuff inside. If I really want to be picky, I would have painted the pink storage bin white, but I decided not to bother and save time. Also, try grouping similar items. I stacked all of my white books together and kept my jewelry together for the most part. Paying attention to the little details goes a long way. I stuck to only magazines with white binding for a clean look. Just like anything else, as you experiment and practice you'll keep getting better and better.

Hello! Did you all have a great Easter weekend? What's new in your life? I headed back to my hometown this weekend. Friday I had a fun night catching up with friends from high school over drinks. Even though we are only a couple hours away we still don't see each other as much as I'd like! Saturday was a work day where I caught up on lots of e-mail and things on my to-do list, but I also got to play with my niece so I still had some fun. She is the sweetest thing and loves to "talk" at three months! On Sunday we had a nice family dinner and then I headed back to school for a busy week ahead. When I'm not at my own place I kind of forget about social media, so I've been MIA lately on Twitter on Instagram. I'm really trying to get better at that and posting more regularly.

This weekend I was asked to participate in the Liebster Award by Emily of The Small Stuff Counts. To be honest, I had never heard of the Liebster Award before. I started reading Emily's post about it and discovered it's a way for bloggers to recognize other up and coming blogs. How cool is that? That is one thing I love about the blogging community so much. Even though we have never met, bloggers are so supportive of each other and I love these little things that help connect you to even more fabulous bloggers and readers. That's what blogging is all about! Thank you so much Emily for thinking of Hammer & Heels and nominating me! What a fun surprise :) If you're wondering about the name, Liebster is a German term of endearment which couldn't be more fitting since I am German myself.

So here's how the Liebster Awared works: share 11 facts about yourself. Answer 11 questions from the blogger that nominated you. Then nominate other bloggers for the Liebster Award.

11 Questions:

Do you collect anything?

Technically, no. But if we're talking home decor and little trays and dishes and things…that's another story.

If you had a Saturday all alone with nothing you needed to do, how would you spend your time?

That would be a dream! I would probably go shopping, grab lunch at a cute cafe, go thrifting, and catch up on my Bloglovin' feed!

What is your pet peeve?

It's funny because I was just talking about it this weekend. One of my pet peeves is when people upload the worst photos to social media. When I say worst, I mean: blurry, dark, uninteresting, with zero effort. I don't claim to take the best photos and I'm definitely not an expert (in fact, I'm working on improving) but if you can hardly see what the picture is of, why upload it?

What is your favorite season of the year?

Just recently I had a change in heart and decided fall was my favorite season. For the longest time it was summer, but now that we're recovering from a rough winter, spring isn't looking too shabby either.

If you could travel anywhere in the world and money was no object, where would you go? Why?

Greece! I have always had a fascination with the country and its blue waters and white buildings (probably after watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants as a kid) and am dying to go ever since. It looks absolutely beautiful, and it would be so fun to experience the culture.

What is one thing on your bucket list?

Honestly, I don't have an official bucket list besides the things I think about in my head. Maybe I should make one. Going to Greece would definitely be on it though!

What is something you fear?

Hmm…the unknown. It really makes planning difficult :)

What is your favorite small business near you?

Raygun in Des Moines carries t-shirts, koozies, and other random things with the funniest sayings related to states in the Midwest. They are so creative and have the coolest shop. That's where I got my "I'm not a player, I just blog a lot" t-shirt!

What did you want to be when you grew up? Did you meet your expectations?

This is so funny to think about now! I went in phases. I used to want to be a cosmetologist and do hair when I was in elementary, then I wanted to be an athletic trainer, then I wanted to be in sports marketing and wear suits every day so I looked important. I'm still in marketing, but I have a much more entrepreneurial spirit and I'd love to start my own small business someday. Fun fact: I never changed my major in college! I chose marketing and thankfully I love it.

What inspired you to start your blog?

I was away from my friends in a new city at an internship I didn't like. I was tired of coming home from my internship with nothing to do, so I started reading online. I wish I could remember the very first blog post I read, but it sort of just lead me to a new blog, and then another, and suddenly I was obsessed with the blogging world because everyone had a different story, but they were so inspiring. I quickly found that almost every blogger started their blog as a creative outlet, which was exactly the thing I needed. I related with bloggers so well and I admired the whole community they built. I have always been obsessed with home decor and projects, so I used my blog as a way to organize all of my thoughts and share my ideas. It is one of the best things I ever did, and I never dreamed of saying that the very first day I started it.

What’s one piece of advice you have for something thinking about starting their own blog?

Just do it! What's the worst thing that can happen? I remember contemplating starting my blog for weeks, and I thought I needed to nail down every little detail before I started my blog. Remember, nothing is irreversible. If you hate your blog name or design, you can always change it later. I promise, the most important thing is just starting. After that, all of the other decisions will come with time as you begin to find your niche, so don't stress about it too much in the beginning.

11 Random Facts:

1. I'm the youngest of 5 kids, with 10 years between me and my oldest sister.
2. Growing up on a farm meant the closest Target was an hour away.
3. I played volleyball, basketball, track, and softball in high school.
4. I graduated with a class of 42 people. There are 1,000 people in my hometown.
5. I am a night owl and would rather stay up late than get up early.
6. American Idol is one of my favorite TV shows right now. I haven't watched the other seasons in forever, but I'm really into this season for some reason. Jena is my favorite :)
7. Coming up with 11 facts is super hard. I'm already stuck and I'm only at number 7.
8. I don't have one favorite music artist. I usually listen to what's on the radio, but some favorites include Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan.
9. Out of Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona, Barcelona was my favorite city because of the beach and relaxed feel.
10. I would rather choose ice cream over a meal.
11. I have visited about half of the United States and I want to visit all 50.
